  • That is basically what they do yes. ISPs are the only thing standing in between the entirety of humanity and out of the box selfhosting. With fixed IPv6 IP addresses you could build and sell devices that just self host all your stuff out of the box. You could just sell complete normie people a “cloud box” that they can slap in their home for a one time cost that will take care of all their cloud storage and smart device needs. You could integrate it into any smartphone OS ootb so that all you have to do is scan a QR code on the “cloud box” and it connects all your apps that need it to it.

  • Idk about the additive effects, but:

Fan noise especially is very “white” in the sense that it contains a lot of frequencies from low to high. That makes it ideal for overpowering (and subjectively swallowing) other noises (like other fans, speech, etc).

    Fan noise

Speech for comparison happens in a frequency band where fans are very strong

Running water is similar. When you try to listen to a conversation or a video with speech while washing your hands, you will have a hard time understanding anything. With other noises that are in different frequency bands or only use very small range of frequencies it wont have that effect even if the noise is much louder than the running water was.

Noise cancelling in the sense that one noise actually makes another noise disappear, doesnt really happen under non lab conditions. Its more of a drowning out effect where your ear/brain cant differentiate the two noises anymore.

Selective hearing can do a lot of work by processing the signals from your ear in your brain, but that isnt all powerful.

  • Ofcourse if you think that peoples practical view of the world is strongly dependent on religion, then that would be your reaction to my comment. I just dont believe that this is true. At least in my experience with people old and young, no matter the ethnicity or religious background, barely anyone is so deeply religious anymore that their understanding of reality depends on belief in god.

This comic just doesnt make any sense in large parts of the world where people live either completely secular or only vaguely influenced by religion.

  • I mean in your example it wasnt the software that was bought, but the website no? If most of the project revolves around a single site that uses the software then this is inevitable.

If nobody is willing to take over the maintenance of a fork, then thats just what happens. Its not like there is a deadline to this tho. Anyone could still just fork the codebase of a project that went to shit 10 years ago and start maintaining it again.

If people are willing to work on a project for free thats cool, but without any donations it will often be too much. To get donations you need a central, well known platform that represents the entire project. This is hard to do for a fork, because potential donators would initially have to trust complete strangers to not just abandon the project again right away.
