Come on y’all, would you lay off the gatekeeping. Some of us still think the free web’s a good thing, lest we all end up in a walled garden hellscape. JavaScript is therefore needed if we’re being pragmatic. Just transpile it from TypeScript if you’re too stuck up for dynamic languages building something big.

Good on you for owning up and best of luck. You did well being transparent about your process. I’m going to add two things about generative AI:

• Writing is thinking. If you’re interested in thinking, then be all means do it yourself. You don’t need to have perfect grammar, syntax and such. Lots of extraordinary authors don’t. Strive for improvement, don’t worry about perfection.
• Absolutely beware of generative AI’s biases. They may actually amplify their sources’ biases while occluding them. AI text is just rehashed human text, with all that it entails.

I’m not going to read in detail a text you can’t be assed to write in detail. From a glean I’ll say two things:

• Your alternative voices are basically all privileged white guys commenting carefully from the sidelines. How is that a counterbalance to Chinese activists literally disappearing? You know what it means to disappear in China, right?
• The common thread of your text is one massive, obvious false dilemma. It’s common knowledge that China is under a repressive regime, that the POTUS gives clear signals of envying such regimes, AND that democracy has issues. We can and do talk about all of them.

Right? We got two opinions on genAI among our non techs:

• “genIA is a joke and cannot replace human creation.”
• “Are our programmers writing all the codes instantaneously with genAI yet? Our competitive edge is at stake! O the productivity!”

There’s definitely an opening there, but it’s an uphill battle.

Aw come on, debugging can be fun. I love the investigative vibe of it. You get to be your favorite detective. You start asking around. You pin the the culprit. You get closer and closer to damning evidence. And then Bam! Fixed. Another mystery solved. Mine’s Columbo.

I agree with you that failing to support multiple browsers is an old problem, but I think the cause has shifted.

Back in the last century, supporting both browsers amounted to sniffing the browser and implementing the same feature twice. document.layers vs document.all for example.

Nowadays I think the problem is different: we just don’t know what’s going on. The site is transpiled from TypeScript, written on top of React or Vue which drastically switches paradigm (bonus for Tailwind), packed with building tools, and the average dev has little understanding of what actually comes out. It’s a tall stack of leaky abstractions on top of the already tall one of the web. The dev is pretty sure it works on Chrome so they say it does work there, but it was not even a deliberate choice.

On one hand some posters don’t give a shit. On the other hand, proofreading your own text is systematically harder than one that you didn’t write. I’m sure there’s some scientific explanation; it’s some kind of fact of life. It’s way easier to spot mistakes in other people’s texts. So don’t be too harsh on other posters; they didn’t hire a proofreader and that’s alright.

See I think you’re onto something. Playing music you consider abhorrent during a visit may actually increase the likelihood of ending up with a neighbor that enjoys said music. You either need to discover something universally repugnent or spy on the visitors and make a quick judgment call based on their appearance on what would repulse them better. It’s fascinating how s-expressions are both data type and language syntax. Such power. Only other time I saw something remotely like this was XSLT & XML, which I admittedly do not miss one bit.
